Once the group began planning its inaugural season, the need for a new, permanent name was a priority. Suggestions were collected, with the popular choice being “Gateway Players” because the Tri-Community area had been designated “Gateway to Central Massachusetts” by the Massachusetts Bicentennial Commission.

The new name “Gateway Players Theatre” was overwhelmingly accepted and bylaws were passed and officers elected. Our first slate of officers were:

Aileen Lau, President

Charles Hesse, Vice President

Gloria Earls, Secretary

Iola Northup, Treasurer

Carol Dietrich and Lincoln Burr, Members at Large

In June 1975 a design contest was announced to come up with a symbol or design with a theater motif representing the group. The name “Gateway Players Theatre” needed to be a part of the overall design. Contest Chairperson was Barol Reinhart.

Although I don’t know who came up with the winning design, I know that the theater mask symbol has long been our logo.

Lou-Ellen Corkum

President, Gateway Players Theatre
